Roles of Scholarly Journals
Brandeis librarian Ann Schaffner has studied the history of the academic journal for years. In 1994, she outlined five roles that scholarly journals play within academic communities:
- Building a knowledge base.
- Coordinating information
- Validating quality as in peer review
- Distributing professional rewards
- Building community
