WR 121 Exploring Your Topic

Choosing a Topic

Why Browse First?

question markThere are two main reasons to browse through available sources before you start to narrow your topic:

  1. Keeping an open mind about possible topics as you browse is a great strategy if you want to ensure that there are sources available on your topic before you commit to it.
  2. Browsing with an open mind makes you a smarter searcher.

And here's one last piece of advice, to make this process more meaningful --

Choose a topic that you are interested in learning more about, not one that you already know a lot about.

This makes it easier to keep the kind of open mind you need for academic research, and it just makes the process more interesting.
