Reviews vs Criticism

Reviews:

  • What?  Summary and evaluation of a book or film
  • When?  Shortly after a film opens or a book is published
  • Where?  In magazines, film-related journals, newspapers; on the Internet; on radio and television
  • Who?  Journalists, film or book critics, fans 
  • Why?   To help viewers decide whether or not to see the film or read the book

Criticism: 

"Criticism" is a term used to describe the close examination of a work by a scholar or expert.  It doesn't mean criticizing n the sense of "that movie isn't very good."

  • What?  In-depth analysis of specific aspects of one or more film.  Carefully researched and includes notes and bibliographies.
  • When?  Months or years after the film's premiere.
  • Where?  Books and scholarly film journals
  • Who?  Scholars who study film, film critics 
  • Why?   To further understanding of the film(s) through close analysis
