This course covers writing from across North Africa and the Middle East: early forms of oral literature, the pre-Islamic poetry from the Arabian peninsula, chronicles about the Crusades, as they were experienced by the inhabitants of the Middle East, and contemporary short stories f contemporary short stories.

The main goal of this course is to introduce students to literature set in a wide range of countries in the Middle East. In addition to this geographic range, the course will also introduce students to various genres of literature including traditional poetry, historical chronicles, folk tales, and contemporary fiction.
