Statistics
There are a number of ways to get meaningful statistics:
- check in books, journal articles and newspaper articles
- search the Statistical Abstract of the United States
- search the web, for example searches like:
- "women in physics" statistics
- women physics statistics
- "women in physics" statistics
- some historical statistics may be found using the Historical Statistics of the United States , 1610-2000
Example Search Strategies
Looking for ideas on what search terms to use? Try each of these in the databases and catalogs listed:
1. Search your person's name, for example Marie Curie.
2. Search on the technology, invention, field, etc that your person was involved with. For example, curie and radioactivity; history and polonium; history and radium.
3. Searches like "women in science"; "women in physics"; women and physics; "women in engineering" can uncover sources that discuss how women fare in that field.

Find Scholarly Journal Articles
Locating articles: Once you find your citation, you will need to locate the journal to read the article. Some citations will have the full-text of the article available online. For others, click on this button:
to see if OSU has an electronic or paper copy of the journal. 360 will open a new window and will display a link to full-text if available. If not click the link the library catalog to check if a paper copy is available. If neither if available request the article through the Interlibrary Loan service at: http://osulibrary.orst.edu/ill/.Search tip! Use the Science databases to see if your person has authored a scientific paper; to learn more about their technology or discovery; or to learn more about women in science or women in technology. For example here is the list of databases for engineering.
Search tip! Be sure to change Google Scholar preferences so if OSU Libraries subscribes to a journal the citation will be annotated to indicate this.

Google Scholar searches a variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities. Some articles are available in full-text through OSU's journal subscriptions or through InterLibrary Loan. Type "women inventors" so the terms appear as a phrase. Type "marie curie" radioactive OR radioactivity to search for either radioactive or radioactivity.
