Other ways to gather background information include: searching the library catalog with a subject plus a keyword such as encyclopedia or dictionary; looking in general encyclopedias like Encyclopedia Britannica; and even reading some Wikipedia entries (but realize these can be unreliable and should not be used as a final source, only as a lead to more reliable scholarly sources).

Database Recommendations
Use databases to locate articles, reports and dissertations. Some considerations for accessing articles:
  1. Not all articles are full text online (although many are).
  2. Does OSU have a subscription to the journal, and is it electronic or print? Search the citation to see if it says it is available at OSU.
  3. If not, use the Get This Item button to search for it in our catalog and in our other databases (which might have it full text).
  4. If it isn't here, you can probably get it through Interlibrary Loan
The following databases are useful for finding articles on gender in cross-cultural studies:

General/Multidisciplinary

Academic Search Premier

Comprehensive/Subject Specific

Anthropological Literature (and other anthropology databases)

Comtemporary Women's Issues

PsycINFO

Sociological Abstracts

Comparative Study

Human Relations Area Files (HRAF)

Style and Citation Guides

There is a Writing Guide for the Anthropology Department on their website.

Several databases have citation help built in, but if you need help with citing other resources you find there is a Citation Builder: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/lobo2/citationbuilder/citationbuilder.php. It assits you in formating citations in APA, MLA or in the CBE/CSE formats.

You can also buy software to help you track your research and create bibliographies.Check out:

Refworks (http://www.refworks.com/)

EndNote (http://www.endnote.com/)

(EndNote has a web version, too: http://www.endnoteweb.com/enwebhome.asp)

Both have free trials available for download so you can try it out.
