About this Guide

The goal of the HMSC educational experience is to provide students with a broad-based education in the ecology and management of coastal ecosystems and natural resources. Human population growth and development increasingly have impacts on coastal ecosystems and resources. Ecologists and resource managers need to study environmental changes and develop policies and strategies to ensure the long-term, sustainable productivity of these natural resources. Coastal Ecology and Resource Management (CERM), an intensive, team-taught class designed to lay the foundation for students’ understanding of these ecosystems and resources. Topics range from the coastal forests to the open ocean and emphasize the linkages between basic science and management. Lectures, laboratories, field experiences, and seminar discussions in CERM will expose students in a variety of venues to the ecology and issues surrounding use of natural resources on the Oregon coast.
