Finding Articles & More
Finding Dissertations
Use the Dissertation Abstracts database to search for theses and dissertations related to your to research. Many dissertations are now digitized, so try entering the title as a google search to see if the manuscript is online. If not, request the item through interlibrary loan.
Finding Articles using Library Databases & Google Scholar
ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) is the largest education database, covering journals, conference proceedings, classroom guides, etc. Many records are linked to full-text. Most academic and public libraries have some version of ERIC. It is government sponsored & made freely available at this ERIC site. However, the free version will not have as much full text as the version OSU Libraries subscribes to.
Professional Development Collection provides access to articles in over 300 peer reviewed full text education journals.
Education Research Complete also provides access to an extensive collection of journal material, conference papers and books.
Social Sciences Citation Index is helpful when you want to see which articles have cited to an important article in your research. These newer articles may provide a way to update your research & the articles they cite to may be related to your topic.
Google Scholar You can find citations in Google Scholar and then go to OSU Libraries to find the articles or books, or to interlibrary loan them.
Keeping Current with Research
Learn how to
- Ceate "alerts" & RSS feeds for searches in databases
- Subscribe to Blogs in your topic area
- Use Social Bookmarks in Del.ic.ious
Mini-tutorials on these and other topics are available at the Keeping Current with Research page.
APA Style & Tutorial
You will be using the APA Style for your citations and bibliography. In addition to the hard copy book of the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, 2001, 5th ed., there are many guides on the Internet to help you with formating basic citations. Three have been provided below:
- Purdue OWL
- U of Michigan Shapiro Library
- Honolulu Community College
Need practice? Created at Harvard's graduate school of education, this online tutorial describes many of the in's and out's of using APA style for writing and citing.
You might also consider collecting and managing references with Endnote. This software is freely available through the Web of Science database after you register. The library has instructions for using Endnote. You may want to consider purchasing Endnote or another bibliographic management software because access to the WoS version is available only while you are connected with OSU.

Your Project Outline
Your outline will be written in the same format used for articles in Clinical Case Studies (click on the title ink to go to sample articles.). OSU Libraries does not subscribe to CCS, but you can look at the articles in the online Sample Issue - the link is beneath the journal image. Click on the PDF to bring up the full article. Request articles from other issues of CSS through Interlibrary Loan
CLINICAL CASE STUDIES follows the format of the Publication Manual of the APA (5th Edition). Text and references are double-spaced with tables and figures appearing on separate pages. A100 to 150 word abstract is included.

Finding Books
Finding Books:
OSU Libraries shows what is owned by OSU. Click the Request icon to borrow an item.
Summit Catalog (Collective catalog for 35+ libraries in Oregon and Washington) lets you borrow materials through a cooperative agreement NOTE: Summit borrowing will change sometime in October when a new system is installed.
Google Books Google has electronically scanned thousands of books which can be searched by keywords. Use Advanced Search to narrow your search. Many books are under copyright so only a few pages can be viewed. To obtain the book, borrow through the OSU Libraries catalog or the Summit catalog, or use OSU Interlibary Loan.
Getting Books & Articles Sent to You
Brief overview:
If you want to locate a specific journal article:
- Check our E-journals list first to see if we have electronic access to the publication for the date on which your article was published.
- If no electronic access is available, check the OSU Libraries catalog by limiting your search to "Journals" and then entering the Journal Title to see if we have a print subscription which covers the date of your article's publication.
- We can usually get articles from libraries that own a journal we don't have through our InterLibrary Loan Services . Electronic copies of articles are typically sent to you as a link in an e-mail, so be sure you regularly check your ONID e-mail account or have mail forwarded to the account you regularly use.
